{"id":5461,"date":"2025-09-04T05:25:29","date_gmt":"2025-09-04T05:25:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/signmycode.com\/blog\/?p=5461"},"modified":"2025-09-04T05:30:22","modified_gmt":"2025-09-04T05:30:22","slug":"microsoft-to-enforce-mandatory-mfa-for-azure-and-m365-admin-accounts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/signmycode.com\/blog\/microsoft-to-enforce-mandatory-mfa-for-azure-and-m365-admin-accounts","title":{"rendered":"Microsoft to Enforce Mandatory MFA for Azure and Microsoft 365 Admin Accounts"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Microsoft has also been enhancing cloud security by ensuring that multi-factor authentication (MFA) is enabled for all of its Azure and Microsoft 365 administrative accounts. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>The rollout will begin with Azure portals in October 2025<\/strong> and progressively to command-line tools, APIs, and Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC) environments in October of that year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-normal-font-size wp-block-paragraph\">Microsoft research indicates that MFA can block over 99.2% account compromise attacks, so this implementation is one of the most effective measures to mitigate credential-based threats. <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For organizations, it means adapting their authentication workflows to align with Microsoft\u2019s phased enforcement plan or risk disruption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-mfa-enforcement-matters\">Why MFA Enforcement Matters?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">MFA has been optional in Azure and Microsoft 365 environments over the years. Although adoption is increasing, passwords continue to be the most common line of defense against attackers in most organizations. <strong>This policy shift ensures:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Better defense against brute-force and phishing attacks.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Less exposure of privileged administrative accounts.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Conformance to Zero Trust security concepts.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When implementing MFA in every sign-in path, Microsoft is sealing one of the key holes that attackers often use.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Recommended:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/signmycode.com\/blog\/microsoft-launches-azure-devops-mcp-server-in-public-preview\">Microsoft Launches Azure DevOps MCP Server in Public Preview<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-scope-of-enforcement\">Scope of Enforcement<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Microsoft is enforcing in two stages:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-phase-1-administrative-portals-oct-2024-feb-2025\"><a><\/a>Phase 1- Administrative Portals (Oct 2024 &#8211; Feb 2025)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>CRUD (Create, Read, Update, Delete) operations of all key portals will require MFA:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Azure portal (Oct 2024)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Microsoft Entra admin center (Oct 2024)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Microsoft Intune management center (Apr 2024)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Microsoft 365 admin center (Feb 2025)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Note: <\/strong>Phase 1 does not take effect until Sept 30, 2025, allowing tenants to delay enforcement;
